I Got Married to a Wealthy 74-Year-Old Man So My 10-Year-Old Daughter Could Have a Better Life. Then I Saw Him Secretly Giving Her Money

I continued.

“But I have never taken anything he didn’t freely offer, and I have never tried to separate him from anyone he loves. You’re allowed to worry about him. You’re not allowed to treat him as though age has taken away his ability to make his own decisions.”

The room fell silent.

Then Everett smiled.

“That,” he said to Reid, “is one of the reasons I trusted her.”

## The Man Who Had Come to Judge Me
Reid stayed six days.

During that time, he watched everything.

Brielle running to greet Everett after school.

Me reminding Everett about appointments.

Everett teasing me for buying generic cereal even though we could easily afford anything we wanted.

On his final morning, Reid found me drinking coffee on the back porch.

“I owe you an apology.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“That must have hurt.”

He laughed.

One October evening, he called me into his study.

“Laurel, I know you care about Reid.”

I immediately shook my head.

“Everett, nothing has happened.”

“I know.”

He looked almost amused.

“But something doesn’t have to happen before an old man recognizes love.”

I stared at him.

“I’m your wife.”

“On paper.”

His expression softened.

“Our marriage began as an arrangement. Somewhere along the way, you became family. Those are not the same thing.”

## The Folder Everett Had Prepared in Secret
A few weeks later, Everett suffered a serious cardiac emergency.

He recovered, but it frightened all of us.

Brielle barely left his side when he came home.

Reid came from Charlotte and stayed through Christmas.

That year, the four of us ate dinner together.

Everett raised his glass.

“To my family.”

Later, after Brielle went to bed, Everett asked me to stay in the living room.

He pulled a gray folder from a drawer.

Then said:
