Every Christmas for 15 years, my family “forgot” to invite me and let me find out on Instagram, but after I inherited grandma’s beach house, 23 relatives showed up—and I was waiting with a sheriff and an…

“Ruth left the property solely to Nora.”

Twenty-three faces turned toward me.

For the first time in my life, they all seemed to remember I existed.

By December, the messages began.

Can’t wait for Christmas at the beach house.

We’ll need the upstairs rooms.

Tell the cleaning lady to come early.

No one asked permission.

They simply assumed.

On December 23rd, I drove to the house before sunrise.

By noon, four rental vans rolled into the gravel driveway, packed with suitcases, coolers, gifts, and relatives who had not invited me anywhere in fifteen years.

Aunt Patricia climbed out first.

“Nora,” she said brightly. “Open up. It’s freezing.”

I stood on the porch with Sheriff Callahan beside me and an envelope in my hand.

“No,” I said. “This year, you’re not coming in.”

My cousin Blake laughed from behind a stack of luggage.
“Come on, Nora. Don’t be dramatic. It’s tradition.”

I looked at the vans, the coolers, the matching red sweaters, and the children already running toward the dunes as though the house belonged to them.

“Tradition,” I said, “is what you call taking something long enough to mistake it for ownership.”

Aunt Patricia’s smile disappeared.

“Your grandmother would be ashamed.”

Sheriff Callahan cleared his throat.

“Actually, Ruth filed a written statement with her estate attorney before she passed.”

That silenced them.

I opened the envelope and pulled out copies of the letter Grandma had left for me.

To my family: If you are reading this because Nora has refused you entry, understand that she is honoring my wishes, not betraying them.

Mom stepped forward, pale beneath her makeup.

“Nora, we’re your parents.”

“You were my parents every Christmas you forgot me too.”

Dad looked away.

My sister Lauren crossed her arms.
