While carrying dessert to Christmas dinner, I froze outside the dining room hearing my mother laugh: “Claire won’t mind moving into an apartment. Her three-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar condo belongs to Megan’s family now—rent-free.”

“Ma’am, Ms. Claire Vance does not own unit 402. The unit was sold on January 10th for cash to Vanguard Asset Management. A traveling medical surgeon has already signed a twelve-month lease and moves in tomorrow morning. You have no legal tenancy here. If that truck does not vacate this fire lane within ten minutes, it will be towed at your expense.”

Megan’s jaw dropped, her face turning ghostly pale.

Kyle kicked the curb in fury, shouting profanities at the guard.

Panicking, Megan pulled out her iPhone and frantically called me.

My phone, mounted on the dashboard of my SUV as I drove through the Texas hill country, began vibrating nonstop.

I glanced at the screen.

Missed Call: Megan (1)…

Missed Call: Mom (5)…

Missed Call: Dad (12)…

Within two hours, I had seventy-nine missed calls and more than two hundred furious text messages.

My mother left a blistering voicemail:

“Claire! How dare you! Your sister is stranded on the sidewalk in the freezing cold with two babies and all her furniture! You sold your own home behind our backs? You are an evil, selfish monster! Transfer the money to Kyle right now so they can rent an apartment!”

My father texted:
