The second night was in April, five weeks before the wedding, and it is the one I did not understand at all at the time.
We were doing seating charts on the living room floor.
Hannah had gone up.
And Pamela said, out of nowhere, without any lead-up:
“Do you think you’ll ever take your ring off?
The chain one.”
I said I didn’t know.
I said probably, at some point.
I said it hadn’t come up.
And she said, “It doesn’t bother me.
I just wondered whether you’d thought about it.”
And we went back to the seating chart.
