Part 2: The Calculated Accusation

“Scandal in the historic district tonight as three prominent heirs to the Whitmore estate were arrested this afternoon on charges of elder exploitation, grand larceny, and corporate conspiracy. Sources report that the family matriarch, Eleanor Whitmore, presented the District Attorney with extensive digital wiretaps and financial records documenting a multi-year plot to systematically falsify her medical records. Additionally, a search warrant executed on the premises uncovered a missing $40,000 diamond brooch hidden inside the eldest daughter’s luggage, completely dismantling the heirs’ defense…”

I looked down at the smart key to the Mercedes resting on my coffee table, then at my kids, who were happily coloring on the carpet without a care in the world.

Mrs. Whitmore had played the part of the fragile, trembling victim perfectly, turning her entire household’s greed against them in a single morning. She had used their own arrogance as a weapon, and in doing so, she hadn’t just saved her own empire—she had secured mine.

The bills on the table were paid by midnight. The ledger was clean, the vultures were in cages, and as I looked out the window at the sleek black car parked under the streetlamp, I knew I would never regret the Fridays I spent driving an old woman to leave white roses in the rain.
