Why You Should Never Put a Tea Towel on the Oven Door

This is one kitchen rule I really wish everyone knew.

Wet or damp fabric conducts heat much more effectively than dry fabric.

So if you’ve just washed your hands and grabbed the tea towel to dry them, don’t immediately use that same damp towel to pick up a hot baking dish.

The heat can travel through the moisture and reach your skin quickly.

Ouch!

Instead, use a completely dry, purpose-made oven mitt or dry pot holder for hot cookware.

Your hands will thank you.

A Tea Towel Isn’t an Oven Mitt
This is another easy mistake.

Tea towels are designed primarily for drying dishes, hands, and surfaces. Oven mitts and pot holders are specifically designed to provide heat protection.

They aren’t interchangeable.

A folded tea towel might seem thick enough to protect your hand from a hot pan, but it can shift unexpectedly. One thin section may end up between your skin and the cookware.

And if the towel is damp?

The protection becomes even worse.

What Should You Use Instead?
Keep dedicated heat-resistant equipment near your cooking area:

Oven mitts
Heat-resistant gloves designed for cooking
Thick, dry pot holders
Silicone trivets
Heat-resistant pan handles
These tools are designed for the job.

A pretty tea towel isn’t.
