My Neighbor Constantly Borrowed My Appliances – When She Returned My Mixer Dirty and Broken, I Taught Her a Lesson

“I know.”

She was quiet.

Then she said, “I shouldn’t have left it like that.”

“No.”

“And I shouldn’t have blamed you.”

“No.”

Another pause.

“I’m sorry.”

There it was.

Not dramatic.

Not perfect.

But real.

“Thank you.”

She went home.

Two days later, Greg called.

The mixer was ready.

When I picked it up, he plugged it in.

The motor started.

Smooth.

Steady.

Exactly the sound I remembered.

I almost cried in an appliance repair shop, which would’ve been embarrassing for everyone.

Greg patted the top.

“You’ve got plenty of life left in this thing.”

“Really?”

“Take care of it, and it’ll outlive both of us.”

That weekend, Sophie and I made my mother’s Sunday cake.

Chocolate.

Nothing fancy.

She measured flour.

I handled the mixer.

When I switched it on, Sophie smiled.

“Sounds normal.”

“It does.”

I watched the paddle turn.

For a second, I could see Mom standing in her old kitchen.

Same sound.

Same cream-colored machine.
