Claire cried into my shoulder for nearly a minute.
She held me so tightly that I could barely breathe.
At that moment, I truly believed I was giving her a miracle.
The pregnancy was surprisingly easy.
Claire attended every appointment with a smile that seemed carved from pure joy.
She wanted to hear every heartbeat.
She wanted to see every ultrasound.
She wanted to know every little detail.
The first time she felt the baby kick, she put both hands over my stomach.
“That’s my miracle,” she whispered.
“She’s kicking hard today,” I said.
“He,” Claire corrected softly.
“I just have a feeling.”
I laughed.
“You can’t order a boy from a catalog, sweetheart.”
Something flickered across Evan’s face.
It was there for only a second.
Then he smiled and rubbed Claire’s back.
I noticed it.
But I chose not to think about it.
There were plenty of little moments like that throughout the pregnancy.
Things I noticed but didn’t understand.
Things that seemed strange but didn’t seem important enough to question.
At the baby shower, Evan stepped into the hallway to take a phone call.
I happened to walk past on my way to the bathroom.
His voice was low.
Tight.
Urgent.
“…If the results come back wrong, we lose everything. Do you hear me?”
I stopped.
“We lose everything.”
Then he turned.
He saw me.
His expression changed so quickly that I almost convinced myself I had imagined the conversation.
“Insurance headache,” he said lightly.
I nodded.
I never once suspected that I had become a pawn in a much larger scheme.
Three weeks later, my water broke.
Fourteen exhausting hours followed.
Fourteen hours of pain, fear, exhaustion, and anticipation.
Then finally, the room filled with the sound I’d been waiting to hear.
A baby’s cry.
Moments later, the nurse placed a tiny, warm little girl against my chest.
“We have a healthy, beautiful baby.”
I looked down at her.
I counted her fingers.
Then her toes.
She was perfect.
Completely perfect.
I smiled through my tears.
“Claire’s going to lose her mind when she sees you,” I whispered.
And I was right.
Just not for the reason I thought.
A few minutes later, the delivery-room door opened.
Claire rushed in first.
Evan was right behind her.
I’d imagined this moment for months.
I’d imagined Claire crying with happiness.
I’d imagined her taking her daughter into her arms.
