And it does not stay open for eleven years, and nobody tells you the afternoon it shuts.
Because the kind version does not stay kind.
It hardens. Inside about four months it stops being a mercy and starts being a structure.
By year two you are not correcting a sentence; you are explaining the two years as well. By year eleven you are explaining a decade of silence to somebody who has your handwriting in a flight case.
And while you are busy not correcting it, they are living inside a sentence you made up at a desk in four seconds.
And you are avoiding a man for a decade.
A man who, it turns out, already knew. Who had already paid for the knowing. Who would simply have liked a telephone call from the person who signed the thing.
I had eleven letters.
I had eleven years and about four thousand perfectly ordinary afternoons, any single one of which would have done.
I had his name. I had his town. I had a line on the second page of a file saying he had a brother who flew, which means I could have found that man in about four days at any point since 2014.
And it took a man I had wronged, in a uniform, putting his hand up in an aisle in front of twenty strangers and my seven-year-old daughter —
saluting me for the one decent thing I did in that entire year —
to finally make me say the rest of it out loud.
He has invited us for a weekend. His wife rang and did the inviting, which I suspect was arranged between them.
Posy wants to go because he has a dog. That is the entire basis on which my daughter makes decisions and I have stopped arguing with it.
I have said yes.
I have not worked out what sort of man that makes me — a man who sent a boy out four minutes early, sitting at that boy’s brother’s kitchen table eleven years later, eating a lunch his wife has cooked.
I have turned it over for about four weeks and I cannot make it come out clean.
And I am going anyway. Because he asked. Because he already knows the worst of it and asked anyway.
And because the only thing worse than going would be another eleven years of not.
