My husband rang to say he was in emergency surgery all night. I was looking down through the glass walkway at him at the time, with his arm round another woman and his entire family beside him holding boarding passes. I didn’t go down. I went to a quiet corner and made one phone call.

I did not take his job or his income and I could not have. He is a good surgeon and he still is.

What I took was a building, a house and a car, all of which were mine, all of which he had ten years to remember and did not.

The practice relocated in the August. It cost them about four hundred thousand dollars and it nearly took two of the five partners out, and I have been called some extraordinary things in this city over that.

I will not pretend I did not know it would happen. Emeric told me on that phone call that it would, before I said all of it, and I said all of it anyway, and that is on me and I am not going to dress it up.

The divorce finished in the spring.

Anneke Voss wrote to me in the January. Two pages, not asking for anything. She had gone to occupational health, requested a move to a different unit, and left him in the November.

The line I keep is this: I want you to know that when I found out you weren’t separated, the first thing I felt was relief, and I have had to be honest with myself about what that means.

Rosa Farrow has rung me eleven times in the last year. I have not answered.

Bexley wrote. Her letter is about the children and the holidays and how difficult all of this has been for the family, and it does not contain one sentence about what happened at that airport, and I read it twice and put it in a drawer.

Corwin, her ex-husband, I took to lunch in the June. I apologised to a man for not believing him two years earlier and he was extremely gracious about it and then talked about fishing for an hour, which was a kindness.

I am back in the office four days a week. I am thirty-nine and I run my father’s company and I am, for the first time since 2016, actually doing the job.

You just paid for the room, sweetheart.

Rosa Farrow said that in a hotel on the river in front of thirty people, taking a card out of my hand, at a dinner for her son.

Two of his partners were at that table. Both of them signed a lease with my father’s company in 2009 and neither of them has ever put the two things together.

That is the part I find hardest to explain to anybody.

It was not hidden. It was disclosed, filed, recorded, and searchable, and it was in the pre-nuptial, and my name is on the company.

They did not miss it because it was concealed.

They missed it because I did every Christmas and remembered every birthday and paid the bills before anybody noticed, and once a woman is doing all of that, nobody in the room ever asks what else she does.

THE END
