My mother was SEPARATED from her TWIN SISTER after their parents died — 70 years later, I FOUND her accidentally on Facebook.

I had told myself it was too late, she was gone, that part of my life was closed.” She paused.

“And then you sat down one night and scrolled through Facebook and refused to let it stay closed.”

I didn’t know what to say, so I didn’t say anything.

She picked up her coffee.

“She’s going to be all right for a while yet, Helen thinks.

The doctors are cautiously optimistic.

That’s what Helen said.”

“That’s good.”

“It is.” My mother looked out at the runway.

A plane was lifting off, climbing steeply into a grey English sky.

“It’s enough time.

Whatever time there is — it’s enough.

Because we have it now.

We’re not wasting it anymore.”

She watched the plane until it disappeared into the clouds.

“Seventy years,” she said quietly.

“And it took a photograph on a phone.”

She almost smiled.

“Better late than never,” she said.

“That’s what Miranda told me this morning.

Better late than never.”

Some separations last so long that people stop believing they can ever be undone — but sometimes, one small moment of not scrolling past changes everything.
