Every time we visited, my MIL covered everything my daughter and I used in plastic because we “weren’t real family”—what my husband did that night left her shaking.

Chapter 2: The Woman Grace Feared

On the porch stood Eleanor, Grace’s older sister—the woman Grace had forbidden Liam to mention for nearly twenty years.

Beside her was a gray-haired man carrying a leather folder.

Grace gripped the doorframe.

“You promised never to come back.”

Eleanor looked past her and saw Amber beside the plastic-covered chair.

“So you’re doing it to that little girl now?”

“Doing what?” I asked.

Grace turned sharply.

“This is none of your business.”

Liam stepped beside Amber.

“It became our business when Mom called my daughter an outsider.”

Eleanor entered despite Grace’s protest.

The man followed and placed the folder on the dining table.

Grace stared at it.

“You have no right.”

“I have every right,” Eleanor said.

“You made sure I felt like dirt in this house because Dad adopted me.

Now you’re punishing Amber for having a different father.”

Liam’s face hardened.

“You told me Eleanor left because she hated this family.”

“She lied,” Eleanor said.

“And that isn’t the worst of it.”

The gray-haired man opened the folder and removed an old document bearing Grace’s father’s signature.

Grace lunged for it, but Liam picked it up first.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at his mother in disbelief.

“Mom…

this house was never yours alone?”

Grace whispered, “Please, Liam.

Don’t read the final paragraph.”

What Liam discovered in that document exposed why Grace feared Eleanor—and changed Amber’s place in the family forever.
