Disbelief? A thousand terrible scenarios raced through my mind as I grabbed my car keys from the counter, my hands trembling so violently I could barely unlock the door. The drive to the county hospital usually took twenty minutes, but that afternoon, every red light felt like an eternal barrier standing between me and my son. I kept visualizing Aaron’s freshly shaved head, his quiet resolve from the night before, and the soft, earnest smile he had given me when he said that beauty wasn’t tied to physical appearance. What could he possibly have done after leaving the house this morning to prompt such a frantic call from Lily’s mother?

When I finally pulled into the hospital parking garage, my chest felt tight, each breath short and shallow. I hurried through the sliding glass doors of the main entrance, taking the elevator up to the pediatric oncology wing on the fourth floor. The corridor was quiet, filled with the faint, rhythmic beep of monitors and the soft hushed footfalls of nurses making their rounds. As I drew closer to Room 412, I slowed my pace, suddenly terrified of what I might find behind that wooden door.

I pushed the door open gently.

Sarah was standing near the window, her back turned to the entrance, wiping her face with a tissue. Aaron sat in the armchair beside Lily’s bed, his posture straight, holding a thick leather-bound notebook in his lap. Lily was sitting up in bed, her eyes wide, glistening with unshed tears, looking back and forth between Aaron and her mother. The atmosphere in the room was dense, suspended in a stillness so absolute that the soft hum of the medical equipment felt unnaturally loud….
