My Daughter-in-Law Put Me in a Backyard Tent – Then My Son Came Home Early

My daughter-in-law made me sleep in a tent in her backyard while my son was away on a business trip.

She probably thought she had found the perfect way to humiliate me without my son ever knowing.

What she didn’t know was that Luke was coming home early.

And when he saw where his mother had spent the night, everything changed.

I am 68 years old, and I had traveled hundreds of miles from Ohio because I wanted to spend time with my son and my grandchildren.

I never imagined that I would spend my first night sleeping on their backyard lawn.

My daughter-in-law, Gabrielle, has never liked me.

She has never exactly come out and said, “I hate you,” but she has never needed to.

Her expressions, her comments, the way she acted whenever Luke and I spent time together—those things said enough.

The problem, as far as I could tell, was simple.

Gabrielle wanted to be the center of Luke’s world.

And whenever his attention turned toward me, even for a little while, she seemed to take it personally.

I live in another city, and as I’ve gotten older, certain things have become more difficult. I have arthritis in both knees, a bad back, and the usual collection of aches that seem to arrive with age.

Because of that, Luke occasionally comes to visit me.

He helps with things around the house, fixes whatever needs fixing, carries heavy boxes, and makes sure I’m doing all right.

To me, that’s what a son does.

To Gabrielle, it seemed to be a competition.

So when Luke invited me to come stay with them and spend time with my grandchildren, Poppy and Jonah, I was thrilled.

I had missed those children terribly.
