I could barely get the words out.
“What did she find in his trunk?”
Rachel hesitated again.
“Willow, I really debated calling you. But if it were me, I’d want to know.”
My heart started pounding.
“Know what?” I whispered.
Rachel took a breath.
Then she carefully chose her words.
“Ava told Josephine she found a woman’s wig in David’s trunk.”
I froze.
“A wig?”
“And a sparkly dress. Big sunglasses. Lipstick.”
She paused.
“Look, I’m so sorry, Willow. I know we barely know each other. I went back and forth all morning about whether I should call you.”
The kitchen seemed to become completely silent.
My coffee sat untouched on the table.
I couldn’t remember how to hold the phone properly.
“Are you sure that’s what she said?” I asked.
“Your daughter repeated it two more times.”
Rachel’s voice remained quiet.
“Ava said it was hidden in ‘Daddy’s trunk in the garage.’ Josephine thought it was a gift for you.”
My stomach dropped.
“I’m so sorry,” Rachel said again.
I thanked her.
I don’t remember exactly what words I used.
I only remember hanging up and staring at the refrigerator.
There was a little drawing Ava had made sitting there.
The three of us were holding hands.
Me.
David.
