Chapter 1: The Joke That Went Too Far

My husband was always joking in front of his brother and said, “You can have my wife, I’m so sick of her already” — but then his brother finally taught him a lesson.

My husband’s brother, Matt, asked whether he could stay with us while his house was being renovated.

Of course, my husband, Kevin, and I didn’t object.

But once Matt moved in, Kevin decided he had the right to make jokes about me in front of him.

At first, the jokes were innocent.

If I reminded Kevin that it was time to pay the electric bill, he’d glance at Matt and say:

“See what marriage does to you?

You constantly owe a ton of money.”

If I asked him to take out the trash, he’d sigh dramatically in front of Matt and say:

“Still sure you want to get married someday?

You’ll end up being a slave like this.”

We even sort of laughed about it.

At least at first.

But Kevin kept making more and more jokes, and it was beginning to get to me.

One day, I approached him and asked him not to joke about me like that because it bothered me.

Just then, Matt stepped out of his room, and Kevin burst out laughing and said:

“See?

She doesn’t even understand jokes anymore.

That’s why you should never get married — you won’t even be allowed to joke in your own house!”

Honestly, Matt looked uneasy too.

He was very polite and reserved.

It was clear he didn’t want to interfere in our relationship or cause any drama.

But one evening, Kevin crossed the line.

I called the guys to dinner, which I’d prepared myself.

Before that, I’d cleaned the house, taken our kids to school, picked them up, helped them with their homework, fed them, cleaned everything up again, done the laundry, and finally put them to bed.

Then we decided to sit down and eat.

Matt and Kevin had just sat down at the table when suddenly water started pouring out from under the kitchen sink.

It was coming out so hard that within seconds, the entire floor was wet.

We quickly shut off the water and stopped the leak.

Then I sighed and said:

“Kevin, I’ve been asking you for weeks to replace that leaking supply line under the sink.

And now it finally burst.”

He just shrugged and said:

“And what have you been doing?

You could’ve done it yourself by now.

You sit at home all day.”

I tried to remain calm.

“Kevin, I’ve been busy all day today.

And I’ve been asking you for weeks to take care of that leak.

This problem has been there for a while.”

He rolled his eyes, glanced at Matt, and said:

“Do you happen to want to get married?

You can have my wife — I’m so sick of her already.

She’s always telling me what to do.”

I just stood there with my jaw nearly hanging open.

Before I had a chance to say anything, Matt smiled and said:

“You know what, Kevin?

You’re right.

Let’s sit down at the table and have dinner.”

So we did.

Then someone knocked on the door.

Matt stood up and opened it.

His special guest had arrived.

Oh, Kevin turned as red as a tomato the second he saw that guest.

I thought you could probably spot him from a satellite map because of how red his face was.
