Chapter 1: The Paper in His Hand

My 18-year-old son moved in with his best friend — two days later, he came home crying and said, “Mom, I need to confess something.”

I switched off the stove and pulled out a chair.

“Sit down, sweetheart.

What happened?”

Luke remained by the door, wiping his cheeks with his sleeve.

Then he reached behind him and locked it.

“Are we alone?”

“Yes.

Did you and Ben have a fight?”

“No.

Please don’t call him.”

That scared me more than his tears.

Ben had been Luke’s best friend since childhood.

The boys looked so similar that strangers often asked if they were twins.

So I was delighted when they decided to get a place together and live on their own.

But now my son wouldn’t even glance at me.

“Luke, whatever it is, we’ll work through it.”

“You don’t know that,” he snapped.

My stomach knotted.

Was there something about Ben he had been afraid to tell me?

I made myself ask the most obvious question, even as my heart sank.

“Sweetheart…

are you two together?”

His head jerked up.

“What?”

“If Ben is more than a friend, you can tell me.

You’re still my boy.”

“No, Mom.” He shook his head.

“This has nothing to do with that.

It’s…

it’s much worse.”

He finally sat down but kept his jacket on.

“I didn’t move in because I wanted to leave home.”

“Then why?”

“Ben told me something.

I had to see for myself.

I didn’t believe him at first, but now I know it’s true.”

“What did he tell you?”

Luke pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket.

“I need you to promise you won’t lie to me.”

For the first time, I was afraid to look at what he was holding.

“Where did you get that?”

“From Ben’s house.”

I reached for the paper, expecting to see something harmless.

Instead, I froze.

My legs went so weak that I had to sit down.

What did Luke discover—and how will Ben react when he learns the truth is out?
