Chapter 1: The Suitcase That Wasn’t Mine
My best friend and I mistakenly switched suitcases after our flight — I thought it was just an innocent mistake we’d laugh about until she called me and said, “Please tell me you haven’t looked inside.”
Mia and I had been best friends for nearly fifteen years.
We’d just returned from a five-day girls’ trip, and by the time our delayed flight landed, we were both exhausted.
Our suitcases were almost identical — black hard-shell cases, same size, same brand.
At baggage claim, we picked up our bags, hugged goodbye, and headed home.
I didn’t notice the mistake until I rolled mine into the bedroom and opened it.
Right on top was a vivid red sweater.
I stared at it for a moment.
Then I started laughing.
“Mia, seriously?” I said to myself.
This was exactly the kind of silly thing that happened to us.
I even took a picture of the sweater, planning to text her something like, “Nice wardrobe upgrade.”
Before I could send it, my phone rang.
Mia.
I answered, still laughing.
“You’re never going to believe what we did.”
She didn’t laugh back.
“Karen…
do you have my suitcase?”
“Apparently.
And you have mine.”
There was a pause.
Then Mia said, very softly,
“Please tell me you haven’t looked inside.”
My smile vanished.
“What?”
“Did you take anything out?”
“No.
I just opened it.”
“Karen, close it.”
I glanced at the suitcase.
“Mia, what’s going on?”
“Just zip it up.
Please.
I’ll come get it.”
After fifteen years of friendship, I knew when Mia was embarrassed.
This wasn’t embarrassment.
She sounded annoyed.
I should have listened.
Instead, I carefully moved the red sweater aside.
And when I saw what was underneath, my stomach dropped.
What was Mia so desperate to hide—and what will Karen do next?
