Inside were photographs of Mia with my husband, Daniel.
In one, they stood outside a small house I had never seen.
In another, Daniel was holding the hand of a little girl who looked about eight.
My fingers began to shake.
On the back, someone had written, “Daddy’s birthday — our little secret.”
“Mia,” I whispered into the phone.

A car had pulled into my driveway.
“Mia, are you here already?”
“No,” she replied.
The front door opened downstairs.
Then I heard Daniel call my name.
Mia gasped.
“Karen, hide the photographs.
Don’t let him know you’ve seen the little girl.”
Footsteps started climbing the stairs.
What secret were Mia and Daniel hiding from Karen—and who was the little girl?
