Chapter 7: The Day He Almost Won
The emergency hearing began at nine the next morning.
Daniel sat beside his attorney with a neat stack of documents and the calm expression he used whenever he wanted me to doubt myself.
His attorney stood.
“Mr.
Lawson is Lily’s biological father.
Claire has concealed the child, while Mrs.
Lawson and her friend removed private materials from his possession.”
Grace rose.
“The materials were found inside a suitcase belonging to Mia.”
Daniel looked at the judge.
“Mia has been following me for months.
Karen is distressed and being manipulated.”
I stood when Grace called my name.
“Did you authorize Daniel to transfer your inheritance?”
“No.”
Daniel’s attorney handed me a document.
“Is that your signature?”
“It resembles it.”
“So you may have signed it?”
“I did not.”
Daniel leaned toward his attorney and whispered.
The judge studied the property record, then the custody filing.
“The signatures appear consistent,” she said.
Daniel’s mouth lifted slightly.
Grace placed Evelyn’s recorder on the table.
“We have an audio statement.”
“Obtained improperly,” Daniel’s attorney said.
“Then we also have the original guardianship agreement, Rachel’s letter, and the bank’s electronic authorization records.”
A bank representative entered the room carrying a sealed folder.
Daniel turned in his chair.
“What is he doing here?”
Grace opened the folder.
“The transfer did not originate from Karen’s phone.
It originated from Daniel’s office computer at 2:14 a.m.”
“That computer is shared.”
“Not with Karen.
She was in Toronto.”
Daniel stood.
“This is ridiculous.
I was securing a home for my daughter.”
“With money that wasn’t yours,” I said.
“I planned to repay it.”
“When?”
“When the property sold.”
Claire gripped the edge of the table.
“You planned to sell Lily’s home?”
Daniel pointed at her.
“You filled her head with fear because you wanted Rachel’s trust.”
The courtroom door opened again.
Evelyn entered with a younger woman wearing a bank badge.
Daniel’s attorney whispered, “Who is that?”
The woman faced the judge.
“I witnessed Mr.
Lawson submit the transfer request.
He told me his wife was ill and unable to attend.”
Daniel’s chair scraped backward.
“You approved it.”
“Because you presented a notarized authorization.
Yesterday, we confirmed the notary stamp was copied from an older document.”
Daniel’s attorney stopped taking notes.
The judge looked directly at Daniel.
“Sit down.”
For the first time, he obeyed without speaking.
During a short recess, Daniel cornered Evelyn in the hallway.
“I can make this disappear,” he said.
“Tell them you misunderstood the recording.”
Evelyn held her handbag against her side.
“And what do I receive?”
“The cottage.
I’ll sign it over to you.”
“You would bribe your mother with Karen’s property?”
His eyes narrowed.
“You owe me.”
A small light blinked above the hallway security camera.
Grace stepped from behind the door.
“Thank you, Daniel.”
He looked up at the camera and ran toward the courtroom table.
He seized Rachel’s letter and tore it down the middle.
Claire cried out.
Grace remained still.
“The original was filed electronically at seven this morning.”
The judge returned and ordered Daniel to place both pieces on the table.
“Temporary guardianship remains with Claire,” she said.
“Mr.
Lawson will have supervised contact only.
The house and related accounts are frozen pending investigation.”
Daniel looked at me as the officer escorted him from the room.
“You think you’ve won?”
“No,” I said.
“I think Lily is safe for today.”
Grace’s phone rang before we reached the exit.
She listened, then turned toward Mia.
“The bank found another account receiving Karen’s money.”
Mia swallowed.
“Whose name is on it?”
Grace lowered the phone.
“Yours.”
