Chapter 1: The Ring Bearer’s Secret

My late sister’s son was our ring bearer—at the altar, he refused to hand over the rings, pointed at my fiancé and said, “Mom told me not to give them to him until you see this.”

My sister Judy d!ed in a car cr@sh a year ago while driving to pick up her son, Bruce, from school.

That afternoon troubled me for another reason.

I’d dropped by before she left and heard her arguing with someone on the phone.

“You don’t get to decide whether she deserves to know,” Judy snapped.

The moment she noticed me, she ended the call.

“Who was that?”

Her face was ashen.

“I’ll explain tonight.

I promise.”

She never came home.

Bruce was seven, and I became his guardian.

My boyfriend, Douglas, kept us together through the worst months.

He’d been with me for almost a year before Judy d!ed, and as far as I knew, he’d only met her after I introduced them.

Six months later, he proposed.

When we arranged the wedding, Bruce pleaded to carry the rings.

“Mom would’ve wanted me to,” he said.

On the wedding morning, though, he was strangely quiet.

He kept one hand held against the inside of his little suit jacket and wouldn’t let anyone else touch the ring box.

I thought he was nervous.

Then I reached the altar.

The officiant smiled.

“Bruce, may we have the rings?”

Bruce didn’t move.

“Sweetheart?” I whispered.

He glanced at Douglas, then at me.

Then he pointed at Douglas.

“Mom told me not to give them to him until you see this.”

The church went silent.

Bruce opened the ring box and gently lifted the little velvet pillow holding our rings.

Something tiny was hidden underneath.

“Mom gave me this,” he said.

“She told me if you ever married Douglas, I had to show you before I gave him the rings.”

“Did she tell you what it was?”

Bruce shook his head.

“She said I wasn’t allowed to open it.”

I reached for it.

The moment Douglas saw what Bruce had been hiding, all the color drained from his face.

“Don’t,” he said.

I turned toward him.

“Don’t what?”

He didn’t answer.

My heart started pounding.

I opened it.

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

The church, the guests, even Bruce beside me seemed to disappear.

Douglas took a step toward me.

I stepped back.

“Don’t come any closer.”

He froze.

I stared down at what my sister had left me, then back at the man I was supposed to marry.

My knees almost gave out.

“Oh my God…” I whispered.

“How could you do this?”

What did Judy leave behind—and why was Douglas so terrified?
