Chapter 2: The Photograph Beneath the Rings
Inside was a photograph folded around a tiny brass key.
In the picture, Douglas was holding newborn Bruce beside Judy’s hospital bed.
The date was eight years old—long before Douglas claimed they had met.
“You lied to me,” I said.
“You knew Judy before I did.”
“It isn’t what you think.”
“Then tell me what it is.”
Douglas reached for the photograph, but I pulled it away.
On the back, Judy had written: **Ask Douglas why Bruce has his eyes.
The key opens Box 317.**
Bruce stared at the picture.
“Why are you holding me?”
Douglas’s lips parted, but no words came out.
A woman in the front pew suddenly stood.
I recognized her as Judy’s former attorney.
“Douglas,” she said, “you promised me she would never find that key.”
The guests gasped.
I turned toward her.
“What’s inside Box 317?”
Her eyes moved to Bruce.
“The proof Judy hid before the cr@sh.”
Douglas seized my wrist.
“We’re leaving.
Now.”
Before I could pull free, Bruce cried, “Let her go!”
The attorney stepped into the aisle and raised her phone.
“You should listen to Judy’s final recording first,” she said.
Then she pressed PLAY—and Douglas’s own voice filled the church.
What did Judy record, and why was Douglas desperate to hide it from Bruce?
