My husband invited his boss to dinner without asking me — halfway through the meal, his boss turned to me and said, “So you don’t know yet?”

Chapter 6: The Lie That Looked Like Proof

Grace returned within an hour and copied the flash drive onto her laptop.

Mr.

Bennett stood behind her while Laura sat beside me.

Nathan remained across the room.

Grace opened the first recording.

Susan’s voice came through the speakers.

“If the housing money goes into the new account, Natalie won’t see it.”

Nathan answered, “She checks everything.

Don’t use our regular account.”

I turned toward him.

“That conversation was about a surprise anniversary trip,” he said.

“She cut out the beginning.”

Grace played the next file.

Nathan’s voice again: “Use my login.

I trust you.”

Susan replied, “Then I’ll take care of all of it.”

Mr.

Bennett closed his eyes.

“It’s edited,” Nathan said.

“Check the original files.”

“These are the only copies Laura brought,” Grace replied.

Laura shook her head.

“Susan kept the originals on her office computer.”

Nathan stepped toward her.

“You said you had proof.”

“I said I had what she told me to destroy.”

My phone rang.

Susan’s name appeared on the screen.

“Answer it,” Grace said.

“Put it on speaker.”

I did.

“Natalie, we need to talk privately.”

“Say what you have to say.”

“You’re surrounded by people who will protect the company, not you.”

“You used my identity.”

“Nathan used you first.”

His hands curled at his sides.

“Tell her the recordings are edited.”

Susan laughed.

“Why would I edit your own words?”

Grace leaned close to the phone.

“Susan, return to the office.

Do not access your computer.”

“Grace?

How convenient.”

“Return immediately.”

“I’m already with my attorney.”

Susan’s voice changed as she addressed me again.

“I can keep your name out of this, Natalie.”

“How?”

“Tell Grace that you signed the consent form and opened the account.

Say you forgot because Nathan handled the details.”

“And what do I receive for that lie?”

“Your mortgage gets paid off.”

Nathan moved toward the phone.

“You’re trying to bribe my wife?”

“I’m offering her the only chance to save her home.”

I looked at him.

“Why would my home need saving?”

Susan was silent for one beat too long.

Grace began typing.

“Natalie, check your mortgage account.”

I opened the banking app.

A new line sat beneath our usual balance: SECOND LIEN—PENDING REVIEW.

“Nathan?”

“I didn’t do that.”

“The application used your login,” Susan said.

“Again.”

Mr.

Bennett leaned over the phone.

“You just admitted knowing how it was submitted.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“You knew the account details before Natalie opened them.”

Susan’s breathing sharpened.

Then the call ended.

Grace dialed the company’s technology director.

“Disable Susan’s access now.”

A man answered after two rings.

“I’m trying.

Someone is deleting the Seattle files.”

“Preserve the server.”

“She’s using Nathan’s credentials.”

Mr.

Bennett stared at Nathan.

Nathan sat down slowly.

“She’s making it look like me.”

Grace’s phone chimed.

She read the incoming message and turned the screen toward us.

It was an email from Susan to the company’s executive board.

Attached were the forged consent, the joint account application and Nathan’s recordings.

The subject line read: URGENT—RELOCATION MISCONDUCT BY NATHAN AND NATALIE COLE.

My name was now inside the lie.

Nathan reached across the table.

“Nat, I’ll fix this.”

I pulled my hand away.

“You already had three weeks.”

Mr.

Bennett’s phone rang next.

He listened, said nothing, then placed it down.

“The board has terminated Nathan’s access and frozen the investigation,” he said.

“They believe Susan is the whistleblower.”

Laura’s face crumpled.

“No.

She planned this.”

Mr.

Bennett looked at her.

“Can you prove it?”

Laura stared into the open box.

Then she reached beneath the folded cardboard base and pulled out a second phone.

“I think Susan forgot I was still recording when she told me whose signature to copy.”
