Part 2: The Security Breach

The man standing in the grand entryway of the mansion wasn’t a random delivery driver or a neighbor. It was Marcus Vance, a former high-ranking federal operative and the current global Chief of Security for OmniCorp International. Behind him stood four stone-faced security details in black tactical suits.

Brendan bounced out of his chair, his face flush with unearned arrogance. “What the hell is the meaning of this? Marcus? Why are you in my parents’ house? And how do you know my pathetic ex-wife?”

Marcus didn’t even glance at Brendan. He marched straight past the expensive mahogany table, stopped exactly two inches from my water-logged chair, and snapped into a flawless, deep bow.

“Madam Chairwoman,” Marcus said, his deep voice booming through the vaulted dining room. “The perimeter is secure. Executive transport is waiting outside. Arthur has already initiated the system-wide lockdown. We are ready for your command.”

The entire room went dead silent. Diane’s wineglass froze halfway to her mouth. Jessica’s smirk melted into a mask of pure confusion.

“Madam… Chairwoman?” Brendan stammered, looking between me and the most feared security chief in the corporate world. “Marcus, you’ve lost your mind. Cassidy is a nobody. She doesn’t even have a college degree! She’s a receptionist at a local boutique!”

“Correction, Mr. Miller,” Marcus turned slowly, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. “She owned the boutique. Along with the real estate firm that holds the mortgage on this very house, and 62% of the controlling shares of the corporation that employs your entire family. You’ve been speaking to the primary founder of OmniCorp.”

Part 3: The Digital Avalanche

Before Brendan could process Marcus’s words, a sharp, synchronized chorus of digital chimes echoed through the dining room.

Brendan’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket. At the exact same second, his father’s tablet lit up with a bright red flashing alert, and Diane’s laptop on the nearby sideboard began chiming frantically.

“What is happening?” Brendan’s father shouted, scrambling to grab his tablet. “My enterprise login… it says ‘Access Denied: Security Revocation’!”

Brendan pulled out his phone, his thumb flying across the screen. “My corporate credit card just sent an alert. Card canceled? Total balance demanded immediately? This has to be a system glitch!”

“It’s no glitch, Brendan,” I said quietly, using the damp linen napkin to gently blot the dirty water from my arms. “Protocol Seven is the absolute termination of all corporate assets, security clearances, and financial lifelines associated with hostile threats to the primary shareholder. In this case, that threat is your entire family.”

Jessica stood up, her voice screeching high. “Brendan! Do something! Look at her, she’s bluffing! She’s just a pregnant gold-digger trying to scare us!”

I looked at Jessica, then down at my wet shoes. “Marcus, please inform Ms. Jessica here about the lease on her luxury apartment downtown.”
